Same Day Courier

Same Day Couriers Throughout The UK

The UK same day courier business has undergone a bit of an upheaval over the last few years. The internet has increased customers’ access to some of the smaller niche-players, while some of the national same day courier networks have fallen by the wayside, consolidated or just lost interest in promoting their same day courier services.

Companies providing same day courier services fall into five distinct groups, although there is some overlap between them:

Owner-drivers. The famous, or infamous, ‘man with a van’. There are some fantastic, experienced, reliable and efficient owner-drivers in the same day courier industry. With low overheads they’re typically 20-30% cheaper than their larger competitors and can often provide a superior service because you’re actually dealing with the person carrying out the delivery. Unfortunately they rely on being busy for at least 5 days a week and the best quality ones are in constant demand from regular customers, so it can be difficult finding a reliable owner-driver quickly for your last-minute urgent same day… read more…

Local courier companies. Most large towns have at least one reliable and professional local same day courier company – and they’re usually by far the best choice if you have a regular requirement for collections from the same area; your own premises for example, or a regular supplier. Having named names I’ll have to be careful what I say here for obvious reasons but my personal opinion is that the only things this type of same day courier business have going for them is… read more…

Internet based same day courier ‘brokers’. These are a relatively recent phenomenon and I’m not sure there’s been a term coined yet which describes them properly. Companies like www.myparceldelivery.com and www.interparcel.com provide an internet-based booking service allowing users to book same day deliveries through one or more of the national same day courier companies. As far as I can tell the broker takes little or no part in providing the actual same day delivery… read more…

Internet based same day courier companies. The very nature of the same day courier industry means that it’s possible to operate throughout the country, or throughout Europe, with very little physical presence. With networks of same day couriers and third-party suppliers throughout the country, the increasing number of internet based same day courier companies can often provide the same sort of response times as a ‘national same day courier company’ with a depot in every town, while avoiding the costs associated with actually operating those depots. After all, what’s important is where the courier is, not where… read more…
